Moana tells the ocean to clear a path, allowing her to return Te Fiti’s heart, and the restored goddess heals the ocean and islands of the blight. Maui apologizes to Te Fiti, who restores his hook and gives Moana a new boat before falling into a deep sleep and becoming a mountain. Moana bids farewell to Te Fiti, returning home where she reunites with her parents and the rest of the villagers. She then succeeds her father as the chief (Chiefess) and also becomes the wayfinder, leading her people as they resume voyaging. Moanab is a 2016 American animated musical adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Life at Disney

She connects with Te Fiti and opens her eyes to show her what she has become. Te Fiti calms down and lets Moana restore her heart which brings everything, including herself, back to normal. Immediately after Heihei eats the heart during an encounter with little pygmy pirates known as Kakamora, the Kakamora steal Heihei forcing Moana to retrieve it, after Maui learns of her inability to sail when they try to escape. After Moana retrieves Heihei from the Kakamora, Maui is able to get their massive sailboats to collide into each other and the three make it out unharmed. In order to do so, he needs his hook which is hidden in the Realm of Monsters, held by a giant villainous coconut crab named Tamatoa. In his lair, Maui barely retrieves his magical fish hook while Moana distracts Tamatoa by having him sing about himself.

Development

Born on the island village of Motunui, Moana is the eldest daughter of Tui and Sina, granddaughter of Tala, and the older sister of Simea, with an inherited love for the ocean and voyaging. Even though Moana loves the ocean, her parents aren’t happy about her decision. When her island becomes endangered due to the threat posed by an angry Te Kā, Moana is chosen by the Ocean to journey across Oceania to the island of Te Fiti to restore the heart stolen by Maui, and save her people.

  • Her mother Sina confesses that her father acts like this because of the loss of his closest friend when they went sailing to unforgiving waters one night in his youth.
  • Though Maui commends her on surviving, he still refuses to help return the heart.
  • Moana fails to heed her father’s words and waddles to the ocean shores in bliss.
  • Moana then saw Tala reveal that Te Kā’s curse has now reached Motunui and was shocked to hear Tala also reveal she had been chosen by the Ocean to save all of Polynesia from Te Kā’s curse as she was given the Heart of Te Fiti.

Maui is also given his demigod powers and tattoos back, including Mini Maui, and together, they are able to raise Motufetu. They confront Te Kā, who Moana manages to outsmart in order to make it past Te Fiti’s barrier islands. Moana is thrown off her boat and is nearly killed by the lava demon until Maui suddently returns. Having had a change of heart, he is determined to defend Moana, despite the damaged state of his fishhook. Maui distracts Te Kā while the ocean helps Moana to Te Fiti’s now molten shores.

Short films

Maui begins to pull up Motufetu with his giant hook, but Nalo strips Maui of his demigod powers with a lightning bolt. Moana, in a moment of desperation, dives into the ocean to touch Motufetu underwater, but as she succeeds, Nalo’s lightning kills her. Maui jumps in after her body, and with a magical chant, summons the spirits of Tautai Vasa and Moana’s ancestors, including her grandmother Tala, who help revive her as a demigoddess, with Moana gaining a wayfinder’s tattoo. Maui, also regaining his powers as a demigod, finally raises Motufetu and helps Moana reconnect the people with the ocean.

Moana 2 premiered at the Lanikuhonua Cultural Institute in Kapolei, Hawaii, on November 21, 2024, and was released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in the United States on November 27. The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $1.059 billion worldwide, outgrossing its predecessor and becoming the third highest-grossing film of 2024. It was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. A “meta” version of the character appears with other Moana Disney princesses and Elsa and Anna from Frozen (2013) in the Wreck-It Ralph (2012) sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018). When some of the princesses describe to Vanellope von Schweetz how they stare at “important water” to gain inspiration for their songs, Moana says she stares at the ocean.

Moana 2:

Maui, in return, is granted a new hook and flies off to meet with his villagers. Before leaving, Maui bids Moana farewell with a hug, thanking her for all she’s done. The crew returns home to Motunui, leading a flotilla of the peoples of the ocean, and a celebration is held in Moana’s honor. In a mid-credits scene, Nalo plans his revenge and is about to punish Matangi for helping Moana, when the giant crab Tamatoa arrives to join his cause.
One day, Maui, the shape-shifting demigod of the wind and sea and master of wayfinding, stole Te Fiti’s heart to give humanity the power of creation. This caused Te Fiti to disintegrate, and Maui was attacked by Te Kā, a volcanic demon. Maui lost both the heart and his magic fish hook to the depths of the sea.
